Data Sculpture
The “Data Sculpture” visualizes the enormous amount of data that surrounds us every day in a completely new way.

At a time when digitalization, the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0 and social media are constantly generating new data sets for huge databases, we asked ourselves: How can we experience this data in a new way and make its hidden beauty visible?
We found the basis for our project in the “Connected” platform of our customer Herrenknecht. Here we discovered fascinating real-time data from tunnel boring machines in use around the world - from rotational speed, driving force and speed to position, navigation and information about the layers of rock being drilled through.
We developed a special particle system in a 3D real-time environment to transform these sober figures into an impressive digital work of art. This gave each data set its own visual representation, reflecting its specific properties and dynamics.
Particularly fascinating is the behavior of the particles depending on the rock being drilled through. If the tunnel boring machine hits hard granite, the particles move diffusely and are thrown a long way, whereas they behave much more harmoniously in loose silt. A generatively created soundtrack further emphasizes the dynamics of the drilling process.
The “Data Sculpture” was presented on a 500 square meter LED screen for Herrenknecht's company anniversary and at BAUMA 2022 on a round LED tunnel screen. The result delighted trade fair visitors and tunnel construction experts alike.
We are proud to have set new standards in the creative visualization of complex data with the “Data Sculpture”. This innovative project impressively demonstrates how abstract data sets can be transformed into a fascinating interactive experience through visionary design.
